We call on state legislators to delay the implementation of the zero-emission school bus mandate. Implementation issues such as the continuing high cost of buses, space, and charging infrastructure, are compounded by the lack of electrical power to fully transition all the 55 thousand plus school buses in NYS to EVs. Funding is also needed. The Rockefeller Institute study recommends that New York state fully fund this mandate on school districts. In the meantime, increased supports such as making contracts with firms for implementation aidable, ensuring EV bus manufacturers provide realistic data on the distance limitations of current buses and allowing for the use of hybrid buses would be helpful in moving districts on a steady path towards meeting the zero-emission school bus mandate. Please ensure that the zero-emission school bus implementation is supported and delayed.
