In war, a simple gesture like serving hot coffee, offering donuts, or sharing a conversation can be vital for military morale. The Red Cross recognized this and created the Supplemental Recreation Activities Overseas (SRAO), a program that brought comfort to troops on the front lines from World War II through Vietnam. The women who served in these efforts became known as the "Donut Dollies"—bringing a piece of home to soldiers in the heart of battle.

Giving Thanks: During the Vietnam War, they covered over two million miles, lifting the spirits of our troops with activity books, sports talk, and news from home—anything to distract from the daily realities of war. If passed, this bill will forever enshrine their legacy in the fabric of America, just as they left their mark with their smiles on soldiers far from home.

As these devoted volunteers age, the chance to honor them in person becomes increasingly precious. Awarding them the Congressional Gold Medal is a timely and meaningful way to recognize their remarkable contributions while they can still enjoy the recognition they so deeply deserve.
