TheHouse Committee on Agriculture has put forward a Farm Bill that cuts nearly $30 billion in future SNAP (Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program) benefits – potentially harming millions of low-income households nationwide. Meanwhile, there is a Senate version of the Farm Bill that strengthens SNAP by reducing barriers for older adults, military families, reentering citizens, and some college students; addresses farm worker safety; and establishes a path for Puerto Rico to eventually participate in the SNAP program.
Leading Catholic organizations based in Washington DC have sent a letter to the leadership of the House and Senate committees on agriculture asking them to prioritize Farm Bill programs that feed the hungry, avoid cuts to SNAP, support vulnerable farmers, sustain rural communities, and conserve the land.
