H.B. 690, Passes North Carolina House!!
Assigned to Senate Rules and Operations Committee!
Bill Makes Sure State Benefits Only Go to Legal Residents - Take Action!
This brilliant bill requires state agencies that oversee public benefits and services to verify eligibility and/or take measures to prevent illegal aliens from accessing public services. This common sense approach greatly reduces a significant magnet for illegal immigration in the Tar Heel State, providing a sense of security to the state's residents.
Under H.B. 690, The Department of Health and Human Services, the Department of Commerce, the Housing Finance Agency, and all local housing authorities are tasked with developing a robust system to verify the eligibility of all applicants for state-funded benefits to prevent illegal aliens from accessing public services beyond the extent required by federal law.
In addition, all higher education institutions in North Carolina that receive state funds must verify, for tuition and educational benefits purposes, that all applicants are legally present in the United States. The Department of Commerce, Division of Employment Security, must verify that all applicants are legally authorized to reside in the United States before the first payment of benefits.
