Stand Up for School Safety: End the Epidemic of Gun Violence in Our Schools

Join NASP in urging Congress to pass meaningful reforms to improve school safety and eliminate gun violence so that every child can learn in an environment free from fear.

This year, there have been more than 100 incidents of gunfire on school property, including the recent school shootings at Annunciation Catholic School in Minnesota and Evergreen High School in Colorado. This epidemic of gun violence is devastating our children, schools, and communities. Data suggest that public fear of school violence has deepened, and schools are no longer viewed as safe havens for our children. This is unacceptable. Every delay costs lives.

We are urging Congress to:

  • Strengthen gun safety laws, including universal background checks, restrictions on high-capacity weapons, and safe storage requirements;
  • Expand investments in school-based mental health services by increasing funding for the MHSP and SBMH grants to build the pipeline of school psychologists and other mental health professionals;
  • Support comprehensive, evidence-based school safety measures that balance physical and psychological safety.
