Congress is faced with many consequential decisions about what our nation’s priorities should be and how to pay for them. While leaders in Congress have pledged to keep their hands off Social Security and Medicare, they have made no such promises about Medicaid and have made very clear that significant cuts to critical Medicaid supports continue to be on the table.
Medicaid is already underfunded and does not meet the current needs of people with disabilities and their families. Any cuts to Medicaid threaten to exacerbate the current Direct Support Professional (DSP) workforce crisis. Medicaid must be strengthened, not reduced.
On July 15, 2025, Senator Josh Hawley (R-MO) introduced the Protect Medicaid and Rural Hospitals Act that would, among several provisions, repeal the provider tax moratorium and the future reduction of provider tax authority in the recently passed reconciliation bill. This would restore a key aspect of Medicaid funding that states rely on to finance their programs, including disability services and supports.
