LEARN MORE HERE about why legalizing this dangerous form of suicide will reduce the standard of medical care for all:

Assisted Suicide Legislation is Fatally Flawed

The dangers presented by Assisted Suicide far outweigh any contrived benefits sold by out-of-state, well-funded proponents. The opponents of legalizing Assisted Suicide include countless Maryland residents, respected physicians, the faith community, and leading advocates from all corners of the state. Join us as we fight to protect vulnerable lives in Maryland from becoming victims of this extreme and dangerous legislation.

The American Medical Association remains OPPOSED to Assisted Suicide, stating that it is "fundamentally incompatible with the physician's role as healer."  Despite this warning, Assisted Suicide has been legalized in ten states and the District of Columbia. Where Assisted Suicide has been enacted, the state allows physicians and non-physicians to prescribe and even assist in the suicide of vulnerable human beings, regardless of whether they have received a terminal diagnosis or are capable of giving informed consent.  Initial safeguards in the law are being removed, allowing medical providers to prescribe suicide to individuals living with disabilities and treatable illnesses, including those suffering from treatable mental health issues as minor as depression, and even to children without parental consent.

Opponents have worked diligently to successfully prevent passage of an Assisted Suicide law for 7 previous years.  Thanks to strong opposition from advocates like you across the state, Assisted Suicide has been defeated every time.  But the out-of-state Assisted Suicide industry has invested a great deal of money to convince Maryland lawmakers to enact this policy.

Now is the time to let legislative leaders know that you OPPOSE SB926/HB1328 Assisted Suicide and you expect them to do the same!

People strongly oppose Assisted Suicide for the following significant reasons:

  • Assisted Suicide laws make suicide socially acceptable. States which have legalized Assisted Suicide have experienced increased suicide rates.
  • Taxpayers foot the bill to pay for the suicide drugs and doctor visits.
  • Legalizing Assisted Suicide enables health insurance and medical providers to deny life-sustaining care to patients and evade liability for the death of patients.
  • The poor as well as those with disabilities would be pressured into suicide as an option, so as not to become a burden on their loved ones. To the most vulnerable, a right to die may become a responsibility to die.
  • There are no standard requirements that each patient receives mental health screening and counseling. A screening from a doctor untrained in mental health is not sufficient to assess a patient's true needs or ability to give informed consent.
  • No family notification is required. Some states allow assisted suicide of minors without parental consent.
  • One in three patients who fill the lethal prescription-typically 100 pills, decide against taking it. There are no safeguards to ensure the unused drugs stay out of the hands of children and prescription drug dealers. This is particularly irresponsible, as we are experiencing both suicide and opioid crises nationwide.
  • No doctor or nurse is required to but may be present when the patient ingests the lethal dose. Any complications including prolonged death must be handled solely by the patient and those witnessing the death.
  • Family members who stand to inherit money may assist in the suicide of their parent or spouse, putting the patient at risk of abuse.
  • The cause of death is falsified in public records, not as suicide, to evade accountability and force life insurance companies to pay benefits to heirs.

Please help protect all Marylanders from this extreme legislation and OPPOSE Assisted Suicide.
