A state House committee heard testimony earlier this week on a bill which would allow doctors to prescribe lethal drugs to terminally ill patients. It contains minimal safeguards against coercion. Far-left activists are attempting to portray assisted suicide as compassionate. But there is nothing compassionate about a doctor, whose job is to heal people and care for them in death, forcing a patient’s death. Even the liberal American Medical Association still holds the position that physician-assisted suicide is “fundamentally incompatible with the physician’s role as healer.” And as we are seeing in other states and Canada, ill patients are often goaded into assisted suicide to save money. In California, a patient with cancer was recently denied chemotherapy by her insurance but offered suicide pills for a dollar.
Massachusetts rejected physician-assisted death in a statewide ballot vote in 2012. But the legislature has swung even farther to the left since then, and Gov. Maura Healey has indicated her support.
