For decades, members of Congress on both sides of the abortion debate agreed that abortions shouldn't be directly funded by federal tax dollars. This consensus was called the Hyde Amendment, a provision added to every federal spending bill for 44 years which prevented taxpayer funds from being used for abortions.
That changed when the Biden administration took control and used the national coronavirus emergency to remove the Hyde Amendment from a spending bill for the first time since 1976.
The new pro-life majority in the House can work with the Senate to stop this from happening again by passing the No Taxpayer Funding for Abortion Act, which would codify the Hyde Amendment and make it apply to every federal spending bill permanently.
