Dear Restaurateur,

We urgently need your help to contact Santa Monica lawmakers today regarding two proposed mandates that could seriously impact your business. 

The City of Santa Monica is considering implementing both a Labor Peace Agreement (LPA) and a Right to Recall mandate for businesses operating on city-owned property — which includes restaurants with sidewalk dining. 

These mandates pose serious challenges: 

• Right to Recall would force restaurants to rehire based on seniority, not current staffing needs — even requiring new owners to offer jobs to previous employees before hiring anyone new.
• LPA’s could classify restaurants with sidewalk dining as lessees of city property, triggering the imposition of rigid, expensive, union-like contracts and labor requirements.

We fought this fight in 2017 and won — but it’s back.  

And this time, it’s happening as restaurants are still recovering from the long-term impacts of the pandemic, wildfires, and recent ICE activity. 

Sidewalk dining expanded during COVID and acted as a lifeline for restaurants — and now, the City Labor Peace Agreement proposal threatens Santa Monica’s neighborhood restaurant scene.
