This bill would require the Secretary of the Department of Veteran Affairs to create and implement a 5-year pilot program to treat TBI and PTSD.
Issue Background
Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI) and Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) are medical issues that greatly affect our veterans. We know that veterans suffering from these two illnesses are at an increased likelihood of suicide. We do not have a cure for either of the aforementioned medical conditions, but what we can do is treat their symptoms to the best of our ability. Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy (HBOT) allows us to do that.
The process of HBOT begins by placing an individual in a pressurized tank. Then, a large amount of pure oxygen is pumped into the tank. When the body has more oxygen in its blood, it helps cells heal, including cells in the brain.
AFSA’s Position: Support
All veterans deserve access to HBOT.
