Late last week, we received confirmation from inside the Capitol that the Medicare Physician Fee Schedule (MPFS) and a Medicare Doc Fix would be included in the Continuing Resolution (CR). But just days later, they were stripped from the bill – leaving physicians, once again, without the relief they were promised.
This is a painful déjà vu. In December 2024, physicians were assured these cuts would be addressed in March, including retroactive reimbursement for the nearly 3% reduction in Medicare cuts this year. Now, not only are those cuts still in place, but this marks the fifth consecutive year of declining Medicare physician payments. Adjusted for inflation, Medicare reimbursement has plummeted by 33%, making it harder than ever for physicians to keep their doors open and care for their patients.
With the March 14 government funding deadline fast approaching, Congress is set to vote on legislation extending funding through September 30, 2025. However, in a significant shift, Speaker Mike Johnson and Majority Leader Steve Scalise have now pledged to include a fix for Medicare payment cuts in the broader budget reconciliation package. This commitment follows mounting pressure from advocates like you, and lawmakers who recognize the devastating impact of yet another year of cuts.
While this development is a step in the right direction, it is critical that Congress follows through. As Rep. Greg Murphy, MD, stated: “It is now or never.” Physicians cannot withstand another year of financial strain, and patients cannot afford to lose access to care due to practice closures.
Keep up the pressure! Let Congress know that Medicare cuts and patient access to care are NOT up for debate. Take action today by visiting our website or by texting ZPFIX to 50457. Flood their phone lines. Demand action. Make your voice heard today.
