In 2025, the use of artificial intelligence (AI) in healthcare elicits more curiosity and enthusiasm than it ever has before. The latest American Medical Association (AMA) Augmented Intelligence Research survey, released last week, reveals a shift toward optimism about AI, with 35% of physicians feeling more excited than concerned about AI—up from just 30% in 2023. In 2024, AI adoption increased with 66% of physicians now integrating it into their practice, nearly doubling from 2023. As physicians gain more exposure to AI and as research advances, they are increasingly recognizing its potential to enhance diagnostic accuracy, personalize treatments, and streamline administrative tasks, allowing for more focus on patient care.
Reducing administrative burdens remains a top focus for AI integration, with 57% of physicians identifying it as AI’s biggest opportunity. More physicians are now using AI for clinical documentation, discharge summaries, and medical research to improve efficiency and reduce burnout. However, physicians still have concerns about AI usage, including concerns over data privacy, liability, and electronic health record (EHR) integration.
Despite AI’s growing presence in healthcare, challenges remain. Many physicians and healthcare leaders are pushing for more regulatory oversight to address risks associated with AI usage. Nearly half of surveyed physicians ranked increased oversight as the top regulatory action required to further build trust in AI tools. As AI continues to evolve, healthcare leaders must ensure its responsible development and deployment, prioritizing transparency, safety, and physician confidence to maximize its benefits in clinical practice.
