Be an Advocate
Now that the elections are over, the bigger work of advocacy begins. Catholics bring an important perspective to political processes - focused on the equal dignity of all people, intent on building more just and peaceful communities and informed by our long experience working with people who are most in need. When we reach out to our political leaders at all levels, we must be unafraid to share with them that we are Catholic constituents working for the common good.
Contacting local, state and federal officials may sound daunting, but it need not be complicated. Elected officials work for us. We have the right and duty to be advocates for our communities and those whose voices we amplify. Emails and phone numbers for elected leaders are available at all levels of government. Town halls, council meetings, and other live events are also a good opportunity to ask questions and talk with electeds. We do not have to be subject-matter experts to share our belief that every person should have access to the basics required for a life of dignity in our state and nation.

The state legislature presents many additional opportunities to be advocates. Actions range from simply clicking support or oppose on a bill to sending written comments or signing up to testify virtually or in person at a committee hearing. The legislative website allows individuals to choose bills to track throughout the session and, if you choose, to receive email notices when new action is taken on a bill.
