The U.S. House of Representatives is currently considering funding cuts, including up to $880 billion in cuts to Medicaid. That is 11% of the federal Medicaid budget.
BUT we still have an opportunity to stop Medicaid from being drastically cut! If we are able to do that, we will be dealing a HUGE setback to the people in Congress who want to make deep and harmful cuts to Medicaid. making your voices heard NOW is the best way to protect Medicaid.
Why Medicaid is Vital for People with Disabilities:
- Medicaid is the only insurance program in the nation (public or private) that offers the long term supports and services that so many people with disabilities need in order to live independently in the community of our choice.
- LTSS services include home and community based services such as assistance getting in and out of bed, dressing, toileting, showering and other activities of daily living. Without these vital services, many of us would not be able to live independently outside of an institution
- The Medicaid expansion through the ACA provides vital coverage for many people with disabilities who do not need or qualify for LTSS, but might have other intensive health needs such as expensive medication, frequent hospitalizations and other specialized care.
- The Medicaid expansion through the ACA also provides coverage for many of the family members and health care workers who take care of us and help us live independently.
Millions of children and adults with disabilities rely on Medicaid for the support they need to live in their communities and their health care coverage. When services are funded, people with disabilities have help to get out of bed in the morning, take their medication, get to work, and participate in their communities. Disabled people know that Medicaid is life or death!
Please contact your members of Congress and tell them how important Medicaid is to you.
