When it comes to addressing the complex intersection of poverty and global child health, there are few easy “no brainer” policy solutions. But fully funding Gavi, the Vaccine Alliance, is one of them. Since 2000, Gavi has vaccinated 1 billion children and saved 17.3 million lives. Gavi now wants to reach another 500 million children with life-saving vaccines over the next five years. They also want to support the sustainable growth of vaccine manufacturing in Africa.
The U.S just took a big step in putting this plan into action.
At the June 2024 Gavi pre-replenishment meeting in Paris, the U.S. pledged at least $1.58 billion for Gavi over the next five years. This is an excellent start. Now Congress can build on that promise by increasing the funding for Gavi in this year's annual spending bills. Submit a letter to the editor urging lawmakers to help save lives by making a bold commitment to Gavi.
