Minnesota’s lengthy and uncertain permitting process has been a frustration of Minnesota businesses for decades. A recent report from the Minnesota Chamber Foundation provided data highlighting that for the exact same air permit, Minnesota takes 1.5 to 6 times longer than neighboring and peer states. A coalition comprised of business and labor groups are advocating for reform that will increase timeliness and certainty while maintaining Minnesota’s commitment to protecting the environment and public health. Minnesota is falling behind.

Minnesota’s growth lags other states in the Midwest and across the country. One of the reasons for the lack of growth is the uncertainty and length of time it takes to get a permit in Minnesota, which can take several years more than comparable states.

We must act now and pass legislation in 2025 that will streamline Minnesota’s environmental permitting system, providing more certainty to those companies that want to invest in our state while at the same time, maintaining the highest environmental standards.  Lawmakers should make it more streamlined for businesses to build here, stay here and grow here.
