MCC Supports Tax Credit for Donations to Food Banks and Homeless Shelters

This week, the House Tax Policy Committee heard testimony on House Bill 4992, which would provide a tax credit on monetary donations made to homeless shelters, food kitchens and food banks. The measure, sponsored by Representative Angela Witwer (D-Delta Township), allows for a credit of 50 percent of the contribution, up to $100 for a single filer or $200 for joint returns. For a resident estate or trust, the credit could not exceed 10 percent of the taxpayer's tax liability or $5000. If the amount of the credits were to exceed one's tax liability, the excess would not be refunded. MCC staff testified in support of the legislation as the policy helps to encourage donations to organizations doing these works of charity, helping those less fortunate. The legislation now awaits a vote of the committee. Should the bill become law, it would mark the return of an important tax credit that was eliminated in 2011 when then-Governor Rick Snyder and the legislature reformed tax policy in Michigan. |

If you have not yet signed this petition, please check with your parish for an opportunity to sign or visit Michigan Values Life to request a petition form to circulate among family and friends in your county. The target end date for signature collection is Thursday, December 12th. Individuals and parishes may continue collecting signatures through December 12th. All remaining forms must be postmarked by Friday, December 13th or delivered to Right to Life of Michigan offices.
