  Department Adopts Regulations for Phase Out of Chlorpyrifos  
  The Maryland Department of Agriculture has adopted regulations to immediately restrict and phase-out the regular use of chlorpyrifos, a pesticide used in agricultural production and turf management. Notice of final action was published in the June 5, 2020, edition of the Maryland Register, with the regulation going into effect on June 15. Emergency regulations have been in effect since March 27. For more information on pesticide regulation in Maryland, please visit the program's website.   Department Announces Mail-In Applications for Cover Crop Program  
  The Maryland Department of Agriculture has announced that this year's cover crop sign-up will be conducted entirely by mail from July 1 through July 17. Farmers who participated in last year's cover crop program will receive registration packets in the mail. The packet includes an application, program flyer, step-by-step instructions, and return envelope that has been pre-addressed to a local soil conservation district. Beginning July 1, applications will also be available on the program's website. To be considered for cost-share, applications must be postmarked by July 17. Farmers who have questions or need assistance with their applications should contact their local soil conservation district.

  USDA Adds Digital Options for Farmers and Ranchers to Apply for Coronavirus Food Assistance Program  
  USDA's Farm Service Agency will now accept applications for the Coronavirus Food Assistance Program (CFAP) through an online portal, expanding the options available to producers to apply for this program, which helps offset price declines and additional marketing costs because of the coronavirus pandemic. FSA is also leveraging commercial document storage and e-signature solutions to enable producers to work with local service center staff to complete their applications from home.

  Mitchell Joins Farm Bureau Staff  
 

Maryland Farm Bureau welcomes Kyler Mitchell as the new Marketing and Communications Manager. Mitchell fills the vacancy left behind by Emily Solis who took a new position with the Animal Agriculture Alliance earlier this year. She is a graduate of Frostburg State University where she earned a Bachelor of Science in English, Writing and Literature in 2015. Since graduating Summa Cum Laude Mitchell has been working as the Marketing Coordinator for MainSpring, Inc. In her five-year tenure at MainSpring she helped the company to build a strong brand through innovative storytelling and digital communication methods. Read more.
