  Ask Congress to Ratify USMCA Now!  
 
The White House and the leadership in the House of Representatives have reached an agreement to pass the United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement (USMCA). It is expected that a vote will be scheduled before this year's legislative session ends on December 20th. Ask Congress to immediately ratify the agreement by urging your legislators to support USMCA.

  Voting Delegates Adopt 2020 Policy  
  Nearly 200 voting delegates reviewed, discussed, and voted on 36 state policy and 3 national policy resolutions during the 104th Maryland Farm Bureau Annual Convention in Ocean City, December 7-10. See policy outcomes here.

  Stafford, Draper, Quinn Elected Leaders of Maryland Farm Bureau  
  Wayne Stafford of Cecil County was elected president of the Maryland Farm Bureau during the organization's one hundred and fourth annual meeting Tuesday morning. John Draper of Queen Anne's County and Jonathan Quinn of Kent County will serve as first and second vice presidents, respectively. Read more here.

  Japan Deal a Welcome Win for Farmers  
  Both houses of Japan's Parliament have now approved a trade deal with the United States which will go into effect on January 1, 2020. Statement from former Maryland Farm Bureau President Chuck Fry available here.

  State to Cover 2020 Premiums for Dairy Margin Coverage Program  
  The Maryland Department of Agriculture announced that it will continue its popular cost-share program to cover premiums for dairy farmers participating in the USDA's Dairy Margin Coverage (DMC) program. Enrollment for 2020 is open and runs through December 20th. Farmers interested in participating in the DMC should visit their local USDA Farm Service Agency (FSA) office. Read more here.

  Farmers Encouraged to Participate in Maryland Food Donation Pilot Program  
  The Maryland Department of Agriculture is encouraging Maryland farmers to take advantage of the Maryland Food Donation Pilot Program. Maryland farmers who donate food to a charity that participates in the state's Food Donation Pilot Program are eligible for up to $5,000 per year of tax credit against State income taxes.   Maryland Farm Bureau Offering Five $2,000 Scholarships  
  Five $2,000 scholarships are available for the 2020-2021 academic year. Applicants or their parents/guardians must be members of Maryland Farm Bureau. Applications are due February 10th. More information here.

  Maryland Wine and Grape Promotion Fund Accepting Grant Applications  
  The Governor's Advisory Commission on Maryland Wine and Grape Growing is accepting grant applications for funding from the Maryland Wine and Grape Promotion Fund. The fund seeks to promote the production and consumption of Maryland wine and increase growth of commercial wine grapes across the state. Read more here.

  SMADC Announces Funding for Round of Farmer Mini-Grants  
  The Southern Maryland Agricultural Development Commission (SMADC) is pleased to announce a new round of the Southern Maryland Farmer Mini-Grant program. SMADC will begin accepting Mini-Grant applications on November 1, 2019. The grant closes on December 31, 2019; awards will be announced by mid-February, 2020. More here.

  Maryland Sheep Breeders Offering Scholarship  
  The Maryland Sheep Breeders Association in conjunction with the Maryland Sheep and Wool Festival is offering a scholarship in the amount of $1,000 to a student who has been accepted or is in the process of applying for continuing education at a college or university, technical school, or vocational school.   The Maryland Department of Agriculture will host the Maryland's Best Food & Beverage Expo Wednesday, January 22, 2020. The Maryland's Best Expo provides an opportunity for Maryland farmers, seafood producers, and processors to connect with buyers from grocery retailers, restaurants, schools, food distributors, and other venues.   UMD Extension Offers Calving Workshops  
  The University of Maryland Department of Animal and Avian Sciences together with Maryland Extension will be holding a comprehensive calving workshop for all interested cattle producers. The goal of this workshop will be to cover all areas of calving including, prepping for farm for the upcoming calving season, common calving management techniques, as well as strategies for handling issues that may come up.
