  Rural Maryland Welcomes Hogan's Broadband Expansion  
 

Governor Larry Hogan recently announced a $9.9 million funding package to provide reliable internet access for 225,000 Marylanders in rural communities. This funding is part of the first wave of a five-year plan. "We appreciate Governor Hogan's support in finding solutions for broadband improvement throughout the state,'' says John Draper, 2nd VP of Maryland Farm Bureau.   Changes in Animal Feeding Operation Permits  
 

Changes have recently been made to the Maryland Department of Environment's current (2014) General Discharge Permit for Animal Feeding Operations (AFO Permit) which expires on November 30, 2019. The AFO Permit is reissued every 5 years. The process can seem cumbersome, so the AFO Division will be holding workshops in September and October. For additional information click here.

  MDA to Host Strategic Plan Listening Sessions  
 

The Maryland Department of Agriculture is working with the Harry R. Hughes Center for Agro-Ecology to develop a statewide strategic plan for Maryland agriculture. The department will host four regional meetings to gain feedback and input from stakeholders to be included in the plan. These meetings are open to the general public. Farmers, watermen, producers, and agriculture leaders are encouraged to attend. Click here for more information.

  2019 Fusarium Head Blight Screening Nursery Factsheet  
 

Fusarium Head Blight (FHB) has been a major challenge to wheat and barley yields and quality in the Mid-Atlantic region. To assist wheat growers in their planting decisions for Fusarium Head Blight management, popular local varieties of wheat and barley were evaluated for FHB reaction under heavy disease pressure in the misted nursery conducted at the Beltsville research farm of University of Maryland.   Call for Governor's Agriculture Hall of Fame  
 

The Maryland Department of Agriculture is now accepting nominations of farmers and farm families for the Governor's Agriculture Hall of Fame, which pays tribute to those who have dedicated their lives to the state's leading industry. Nominations are due Friday, October 4. Those selected for induction will be honored during the Taste of Maryland Agriculture event on February 6, 2020.

  2020 Ag Innovation Challenge  
 

The American Farm Bureau Federation, in partnership with Farm Credit, has opened online applications for the 2020 Farm Bureau Ag Innovation Challenge. In its sixth year, the Farm Bureau Ag Innovation Challenge is a national business competition for U.S. food and agriculture startups. Entrepreneurs will compete for $145,000 in startup funds.
