In response to this tragedy and the tremendous needs of our farmers and rural communities, North and South Carolina Farm Bureaus have established the relief funds.   Harvest Caution Campaign Kicks Off at MFB Headquarters  
 

This harvest season MDOT SHA, the Department of Agriculture and the Farm Bureau are working together to educate drivers to expect farm equipment on rural routes and to approach these vehicles with caution. A press conference was held at MFB headquarters on September 27th to announce the harvest safety campaign.   Agriculture and Aviation: A Vital Maryland Partnership  
 

Starting at the end of the harvest up until the freezing period, farmers rely on fixed wing and rotary wing aircraft to aerial seed cover crops. These same aircraft are used throughout the harvest to protect our crops from pests and diseases. As we move forward and debate important national priorities, including infrastructure, we need to keep in mind the importance of small aircraft and airports.   Policy Devel-HOP-ment  
  In an effort to increase young farmer participation in the policy development process, the Maryland Farm Bureau Young Farmers Committee hosted four Policy Devel-HOP-ment workshops across the state. These events were hosted at local breweries to provide a fun atmosphere to discuss the most important work MFB does - develop policy at the grassroots level. We appreciate the support of Falling Branch Brewery, Burley Oak Brewing Co., Antietam Brewery, and Waredaca Brewing Co. in hosting our Young Farmers!

  Cover Crop Aerial Seeding Deadline Extended  
  Due to poor weather resulting in unsafe flying conditions over the last several weeks, the Maryland Department of Agriculture has extended the aerial seeding and aerial ground seeding deadline to October 14th for farmers who signed up to plant cover crops in their fields this fall with the Maryland Agricultural Water Quality Cost-Share Program (MACS).   Next Gen Program 2nd Round Now Open  
 

MARBIDCO announced today that the Next Generation Farmland Acquisition Program ("Next Gen Program") will reopen  for a second round this fall to help qualified young and beginning farmers who seek to purchase farmland, but need some specialized financial assistance to enter (or continue in) the agricultural profession in exchange for helping to preserve the farmland.   Nominations Being Accepted for "Excellence in Crop Advising Award"  
  The Mid-Atlantic Certified Crop Adviser Program (MACCA) is pleased to announce that they will be presenting an "Excellence in Crop Advising Award" for a Certified Crop Adviser (CCA) from one of the five participating states (DE, MD, NJ, VA, and WV) nominated by customers, colleagues or an appropriate organization.   Department Seeking Maryland Producers for 2019 Trade Show in Mexico  
 

The Maryland Department of Agriculture is seeking local food producers to participate in Expo ANTAD & Alimentaria on March 5-7, 2019, in Guadalajara, Mexico. This is the most important trade show dedicated to food products in Mexico and is recognized as a gateway to entering into the Mexican market. Learn more here.

  Mathias Agriculture Energy Efficiency Program Now Open  
  The Maryland Energy Administration (MEA) has launched the 2019 Kathleen A. P. Mathias Agriculture Energy Efficiency Program, with a total of $175,000 dollars available in funding. Read more here.

  UME Launches Online Resources for Farm Stress Management  
  The University of Maryland Extension (UME) announces the release of a new suite of online resources to manage farm stress including financial management, legal aid, mediation, stress and health management, and crisis resources for families dealing with depression, substance abuse, mental health concerns.   Farm and Insect Carriers Not Required to Have an ELD  
  Transporters of livestock and insects are not required to have an ELD. The statutory exemption was extended through December 7, 2018 by the and will remain in place until further notice. Drivers do not need to carry any documentation regarding this exemption. For further information, click here.
