As soon as possible, the United States Senate must pass legislation to require the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) to issue safety standards to ensure the safety of lithium-ion batteries in micromobility devices. IAFC members should tell their U.S. Senators to vote for the Setting Consumer Standards for Lithium-Ion Batteries Act (H.R. 973).
The American marketplace has been flooded with substandard lithium-ion batteries, especially those used in e-bikes, e-scooters, mopeds, and hoverboards. These batteries are continuing to cause death and injury to their users. The bill currently awaiting consideration by the Senate will:
-Direct the CPSC to finally develop these much-needed safety standards for lithium-ion batteries in micromobility devices and their charging components.
-Help prevent low-quality lithium-ion batteries from getting into the hands of consumers.
This is our opportunity to address a growing fire risk in our communities. Action must be taken to ensure these products are fire-safe. Please ask your Senators to pass the Setting Consumer Standards for Lithium-Ion Batteries Act (H.R. 973)!
