USDA, Protect the Public from Bird Flu

The ongoing outbreak of Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza (HPAI), also known as bird flu, has highlighted a critical need for immediate action to safeguard both animals and the public. HPAI has not only impacted more than 100 million chickens and thousands of wild birds in the U.S., but has also infected at least 168 dairy cow herds and sickened at least 14 people (10 poultry workers and 4 dairy workers) and likely many more. This is a serious threat to food safety and public health.  Each time a new person becomes infected it increases the risk that the flu virus will change and become more transmissible in people, potentially leading to a global pandemic with millions of sick people.

Human cases linked to the virus have underscored the urgency of comprehensive measures to contain its spread. To protect against the further spread of HPAI and mitigate its impact on both animals and humans, the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) and the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) must take action.

By signing this petition, you are advocating for proactive measures to protect animals, food workers, and the public from bird flu, while also promoting a healthier, more humane food system. Together, we can urge HHS and USDA to prioritize these critical steps to ensure a safer and healthier future for all.

Petition Text

Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza (HPAI) has been sweeping through poultry farms and wild bird populations in the United States and throughout the world at a startling pace. As of July 2024, 14 people have been infected with the virus in the current outbreak, and these numbers continue to grow at an alarming pace.

Human cases linked to the virus have underscored the urgency of comprehensive measures to contain its spread. To protect against the further spread of HPAI and mitigate its impact on both animals and humans, we urge the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) and the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) to take the following actions:

  1. Increase surveillance for bird flu in all food-producing animals.
  2. Develop and implement a vaccination program for food-producing animals.
  3. Stop feeding poultry litter to cattle.
  4. Provide protective equipment and vaccinations for workers.
  5. Support local pasture-based farms with high animal welfare standards.
