As we approach the March deadline, the risk of a shutdown becomes more likely. With the federal workforce already experiencing chaotic personnel changes and with federal funding freezes, a shutdown risks exacerbating the harm already caused over the past few weeks. A shutdown could have severe consequences, not only for federal workers and contractors but for all those who depend on federal programs.
For a continuing resolution or appropriations bill to pass, 60 votes are needed in the Senate, which means any legislation will need to be bipartisan to pass. Funding the government in the weeks ahead is unrelated to the ongoing budget reconciliation process. Appropriations funds the government, whereas legislation passed through reconciliation addresses spending levels, revenue, and the debt ceiling.
Members of Congress have spoken about the need to ensure that appropriated funds are spent in line with Congress’ intent. We urge Congress to both hold the administration accountable while also not causing further disruption to the federal government through a shutdown. Write Congress today and urge them to fund the government and step into their role of providing oversight of the executive branch.
