Advocate for Refugees
On January 20, 2025, President Donald Trump issued an executive order suspending the U.S. Refugee Admissions Program (USRAP) for at least 90 days. This decision has already resulted in the cancelation of flights for nearly 1,660 Afghans, including unaccompanied minors and individuals, many of whom assisted the U.S. military. Furthermore, the Bureau of Population, Refugees, and Migration (PRM), has canceled refugee arrivals, from around the world, scheduled between January 22nd and January 27th. As Episcopalians, we are called to support those fleeing persecution. This suspension endangers vulnerable populations and contradicts our nation's values of compassion and opportunity.

Refugee resettlement serves as a crucial lifeline for individuals fleeing persecution worldwide. Many coming to the U.S. are fleeing religious persecution and offering safe haven demonstrates America's commitment to protecting freedom of belief for people of all faiths facing oppression in their home countries. Episcopal Migration Ministries has resettled over 100,000 refugees across the U.S. Beyond its humanitarian benefits, the USRAP has demonstrated positive economic, and social benefits in our communities.

The Episcopal Church has long advocated for the protection and resettlement of refugees. We believe that our government's actions should reflect our values, including caring for those in need. USRAP has successfully resettled refugees for decades, with thorough vetting processes in place to ensure national security. The Episcopal Church partners in the work of refugee resettlement through Episcopal Migration Ministries.

We urge you to tell your members of Congress to:

  1. Voice your support for this successful, bipartisan program
  2. Advocate for the resumption of flights for refugees already approved for resettlement
  3. Emphasize the positive contributions of refugees to our communities and economy
  4. Call for maintaining America's humanitarian leadership in providing safe haven for those fleeing persecution

We want members of Congress to know of our support for this program. Join us in urging our nation to protect these vulnerable individuals and uphold our nation's commitment to refugee resettlement.
