Senate Bill 1796 would mandate that every homeschool family in New Jersey submit a letter to their public school superintendent, indicating their intention to homeschool their children. The birth date and grade level of each child would also be required, and the bill does not provide any privacy protections. S1796 represents an authoritarian encroachment on parents' rights to educate their children. New Jersey offers the best homeschooling freedoms in the nation. An organized leftist group of agitators claims to have been harmed because of homeschooling. Most of these assertions are misleading and lack physical evidence. This is yet another attempt to undermine parental rights and to place the government between parents and their children. The bill also requires school districts to annually compile and make available for public inspection on their website information concerning the number of children residing in the district who are being homeschooled and the grade levels of those children. WHY? Vote no on S 1796.
