This bipartisan legislation was introduced August 2024 in the House of Representatives by midwifery advocates, Reps. Derek Kilmer (D-WA) and Juan Ciscomani (R-AZ).
The MIDWIVES for Servicemembers Act establishes a 5-year pilot program that would require TRICARE coverage of care provided by CMs (and CPMs) in states where they are currently licensed and regulated (i.e., Arkansas, Colorado, Delaware, Hawaii, Maine, Maryland, New Jersey, New York, Oklahoma, Rhode Island, Virginia, and Washington, D.C.).
This critical legislation would assist military families and communities by aligning state-level recognition and standards, offering beneficiaries a broader choice of providers, and aligning TRICARE with national trends toward improved maternal health outcomes.
