Urge Congress to support student loan repayment relief for dental and medical residents
  • Student loan debt remains a significant issue for OMSs.
  • The combination of decreased availability of subsidized student loans and higher student loan interest rates have resulted in a significant increase in student debt for OMSs, making it challenging for them to consider serving in underserved areas or in faculty or research positions.
  • Senators Jacky Rosen (D-Nev.) and John Boozman, OD (R-Ark.) as well as Reps. Brian Babin, DDS (R-Texas) and Chrissy Houlahan (D-Pa.) reintroduced the Resident Education Deferred Interest (REDI) Act that would allow medical and dental residents to quality for interest-free deferment on their student loans during residency.
  • Providing interest accrual relief during residency could make the options of serving in underserved areas or in faculty or research positions more attractive and affordable to residents.
  • The REDI Act does not provide any loan forgiveness or reduce a borrower’s original loan balance. Providing student loan relief also is a workforce issue.
  • Please urge Congress to support the REDI Act (S 942/HR 2028).
