As discussed in previous blog posts, the healthcare industry will be losing four influential physician leaders in Congress at the end of this Congressional session in January. The Congressional Doctors Caucus, which includes physicians of various specialties, has been a powerful advocate for both physician and patient needs, often driving important healthcare legislation forward.
With the upcoming retirement of Larry Bucshon (R-IN), Brad Wenstrup (R-OH), Michael Burgess (R-TX), and Drew Ferguson (R-GA), Congress and the healthcare industry are losing a combined 56 years of healthcare expertise in office. Their departure creates a significant void that must be filled by individuals who are just as knowledgeable and committed to healthcare advocacy. Whether you are a physician, healthcare leader, or industry professional, voting is one of the most impactful ways to ensure your voice is heard, and your profession is represented on a state and federal level. Given the loss of these key healthcare voices in Congress, it is crucial to vote down the ballot. While the presidential election often dominates the headlines, it is often the state and Congressional representatives who most directly influence your daily work. In addition, some states, such as California, have important propositions on the ballot that directly impact healthcare.
So, what can you do? Know who is on your ballot and what they stand for, ensure that you are registered to vote, know where and how to cast your ballot, and encourage your colleagues to do the same.
