The High Cost of Care and Its Effects on American Families
August 20, 2024 by Megan Boyd

For many American families, the high cost of healthcare is more than just a financial concern; it is a barrier to receiving necessary healthcare services. Polling by KFF earlier this year shows that nearly half of U.S. adults find it difficult to afford healthcare costs, with one in four reporting that they or a family member have struggled to pay for care in the last year. These challenges are even more pronounced among younger adults, those with lower incomes, and the uninsured, who are most likely to report financial difficulties related to healthcare.

Unfortunately, it is not uncommon for people to have to make tough choices when it comes to healthcare – sometimes postponing or avoiding care altogether, even when it is desperately needed. One in four adults have delayed healthcare in the last year due to cost, with the uninsured population being particularly affected.

While health insurance does offer some protection, it does not eliminate the financial strain of healthcare costs altogether. Nearly half of insured adults report worrying about their monthly premiums and out-of-pocket costs. As we approach the 2024 election, healthcare affordability remains a pressing issue among voters. Before you vote this year, research all your candidates to learn more about their healthcare policy plans.
