Key Healthcare Issues for the 2024 Election
June 4, 2024 by Megan Boyd

The healthcare policy arena is complex, but especially so in an election year. Even though this lame duck session of Congress is starting to wind down, the need for legislation still exists. As some members of Congress are preparing for their departure at the end of the year, new candidates are busy campaigning for Congressional spots. The future of our nation’s leadership is in the hands of the voters.

Before you head to the ballot box this year, it is important that you know a few key healthcare issues that are impacted by your vote. Congress is ultimately responsible for enacting a long-term fix for the Medicare physician fee schedule (MPFS), which has not been updated for inflation in over two decades and sees annual decreases. Issues with the MPFS have also contributed to the ongoing physician shortage. Without a permanent, positive fix to the MPFS, patient access to quality healthcare is in danger. Additionally, issues with the implementation of the No Surprises Act (NSA) Independent Dispute Resolution (IDR) process are ongoing and oversight by the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) must continue.

As a responsible voter, it is critical to learn how these issues are included in your candidates’ platforms.  Who you vote for matters! Those lawmakers are likely to become members of committees, subcommittees, or discussion groups that will focus on healthcare issues and craft regulations and policies.
