The enforcement of labor laws is vital in supporting workers and ensuring their safety and that their compensation is fair. In addition to supporting the workers, labor law enforcement also levels the playing field for businesses in competition for work and protects taxpayers from having to bear the financial burden and economic consequences resulting from labor violations. Currently, Pennsylvania's Bureau of Labor Law Compliance (BLLC) faces significant challenges with only 27 investigators responsible for enforcing 13 labor laws across the state. By comparison, New Jersey, with 70% of Pennsylvania's population, employs 80 labor law investigators. Recent statistics show significant upticks in child labor violations and misclassification of workers. Investigators are also critical in prevailing wage enforcement. In 2023, the Department of Labor and Industry levied substantial fines resulting in over one million dollars collected under prevailing wage across 400 sites.
