California Takes a Stand for Student Mental Health: New Bill Makes 988 Lifeline Info a Must on School ID Cards
October 2, 2024 by Shelley Polanco, Public Policy & Government Affairs, Vibrant Emotional Health

On September 27, California Governor Gavin Newsom (D) signed SB1063 into law, marking a significant step forward in mental health support for students. The bill mandates that all public and private schools serving grades 7-12 must include the 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline (988 Lifeline) on student identification cards. In addition, schools must add a QR code linking to mental health resources specific to the county in which the schools are located.

With this law, California joins many other states nationwide in raising awareness of the 988 Lifeline and enhancing mental health care for students. SB1063 is a vital tool in supporting California's youth's mental health and well-being by ensuring direct access to critical resources.
