Vibrant Emotional Health (Vibrant) has joined several mental health advocacy organizations endorsing the Stabilization To Prevent (STOP) Suicide Act. Rep. Jamie Raskin (MD-08) and Rep. Don Bacon (NE-02) introduced the STOP Suicide Act, which would create a grant program administered by the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) to expand the use of evidence-based models for stabilizing individuals with serious thoughts of suicide. This critical, bipartisan legislation would help strengthen the crisis continuum of care by creating or expanding outpatient or virtual stabilization services for those experiencing serious thoughts of suicide.
In this legislation, SAMHSA would provide grant recipients with training and technical assistance as they deliver scarce and critically under-resourced stabilization services. Grant recipients can include community health centers, rural health clinics, certified community behavioral health clinics, primary care and behavioral health providers, state health agencies, and school-based or campus-based health centers.
Vibrant is proud to support this bill, especially for a mental health champion such as Rep. Raskin, whose life has been irrevocably changed by the loss of his son to suicide. He actively supported the creation of the 988 Lifeline and was a co-sponsor of the 2023 988 Implementation Act.
