Our esteemed Public Policy & Government Affairs (PPGA) department members recently had the privilege of attending the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention (AFSP) Advocacy Forum in Washington, DC. This annual gathering, which unites advocates from all 50 states, was a unique opportunity for our team to contribute to the advancement of suicide prevention efforts and the enhancement of mental health services nationwide.
At the forum, Vibrant Emotional Health (Vibrant) was honored to host a table where we showcased our essential work to support mental health and emotional well-being. Connecting with many passionate individuals dedicated to making a difference in their communities was inspiring. The energy and commitment were remarkable, from seasoned advocates to new supporters.
One of the most impactful moments of the event was the opportunity to meet our crisis counselors in person. These dedicated professionals, who are at the forefront of providing crucial support through the 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline, were a true inspiration. We were honored to express our gratitude for their hard work and dedication and to share some Vibrant swag as a small token of our appreciation.
The forum was more than just networking and sharing resources; it was also a call to action. Speakers motivated us: SAMHSA’s Dr. Miriam Delphin-Rittmon, HHS Chief of Staff Sean McCluskie, Kennedy Forum Founder Former US Representative Patrick Kennedy, and Vibrant’s own Dr. Tia Dole brought their passion to Capitol Hill.
Advocates met with legislators to discuss the importance of 988 and the need for robust mental health services in their states. These conversations are vital in ensuring that mental health remains a priority and that our leaders understand the impact of effective, accessible crisis intervention services.
Our participation in the AFSP Advocacy Forum reaffirmed our commitment to our mission at Vibrant and ignited a renewed sense of inspiration and enthusiasm. The event underscored the strength of collective advocacy and the significant impact we can make when we stand together as partners. We are proud to align with AFSP and all the advocates who are tirelessly working to save lives and promote access to mental health. The forum served as a powerful testament to the influence of our collective endeavors.
Reflecting on our time at the AFSP Advocacy Forum, we are filled with renewed purpose and determination. We are eager to continue our collaboration with AFSP and other partners, working together to advance policies that support the well-being of all individuals. We extend our heartfelt thanks to everyone who visited our table, shared their stories, and took their advocacy to the halls of Congress. It is through our collective efforts that we are truly making a difference.
