On Wednesday, May 15, 2024, Vibrant’s Public Policy and Government Affairs Department hosted a reception in recognition of Mental Health Awareness Month and the rollout of the 2024 National Strategy for Suicide Prevention. The reception was a collaboration with core partners, including the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention (AFSP), the Education Development Center (EDC), the Huntsman Family Charitable Foundation, NAMI, and the Senate Mental Health Caucus. The bipartisan co-chairs of the Senate Mental Health Caucus, Senator Alex Padilla (D-CA) and Senator Thom Tillis (R-NC), opened the reception emphasizing the importance of funding the 988 Lifeline and continuing to invest in mental health. They were followed by agency experts, SAMHSA Deputy Assistant Secretary Sonia Chessen, and CDC Director Dr. Mandy K. Cohen. Chessen and Dr. Cohen highlighted the importance of the updated National Strategy for Suicide Prevention and the accompanying Federal Action Plan that outlines 200+ actions across the federal government to be taken over the next three years. Notable attendees also included Senator Debbie Stabenow (D-MI), Senator Tina Smith (D-MN), and the leadership of the partner organizations. The well-attended reception gave congressional staff members, advocates, and other stakeholders an invaluable opportunity to connect and honor Mental Health Awareness Month.
