As advocates for mental and emotional health, Vibrant Emotional Health is dedicated to the well-being of those who tirelessly serve in the human services sector. In New York, we face a critical opportunity to support a legislative proposal addressing a long-standing oversight in our sector—the lack of a pension plan for not-for-profit human service workers.
The proposed legislation, A.6839-A/S.8660, introduced by Assemblymember Aileen Gunther and Senator Nathalia Fernandez, aims to establish a study group that will include key state departments like the Comptroller’s Office, the New York State Department of Taxation and Finance, and the New York State Department of Financial Services. Their task? To evaluate the feasibility and cost of implementing a pension plan specifically for the not-for-profit human service workforce.
Why is this important?
Pension plans have been established for state, county, and city workers, teachers, firefighters, and police officers. These plans acknowledge the hard work and essential services provided by these professionals. However, despite serving some of the most vulnerable populations and tackling complex needs, our sector’s 800,000+ workers have been left without similar financial security measures.
The pressing need for a pension plan
The absence of a pension plan is not just a gap in benefits—it's a gap in justice. Workers in the human services field are driven by a mission to make a difference in the lives of others. However, mission-driven work does not mitigate the reality of being financially disadvantaged. Prioritizing the creation of a pension plan is not only about acknowledging the invaluable contributions of these workers but is crucial for ensuring their long-term financial security and enhancing workforce retention. We believe that supporting our workforce goes beyond mere recognition—it requires concrete actions that honor their commitment and service.
