Empowering Lives: A Closer Look at New York Health Adult Clubhouse Programs
August 7, 2023 by Vibrant Public Policy and Government Affairs

Vibrant Emotional Health (Vibrant), one of the nation’s leading mental health organizations for emotional wellness and administrator of the 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline, submitted written comments supporting the expansion of New York Health Adult Clubhouse Programs. The Department of Health and Mental Hygiene (DOHMH) proposes to issue an RFP to procure approximately 13 evidence-based Clubhouses, each serving no less than 125 Active Members, in high-need areas across the five boroughs of New York City. Finding community and support in cities like New York can be challenging, especially for adults with serious mental health illnesses. However, there is a ray of hope in the form of Adult Clubhouse Programs.

Adult Clubhouse Programs are community-based mental health initiatives designed to provide a safe and nurturing environment for adults with mental illnesses. Social isolation is one of the most significant challenges individuals face with mental health issues. Clubhouses break down these barriers by creating a supportive community where members develop lasting friendships, form social networks, and feel accepted for who they are.

These programs offer various services and activities to promote social interaction, skill-building, employment opportunities, and overall well-being. The primary goal of these clubhouses is to help individuals regain their confidence, independence, and sense of purpose while reducing the isolation and stigma associated with mental health challenges. Members participate in meaningful tasks and responsibilities, such as clerical work, cooking, gardening, or organizing events. These activities instill a sense of accomplishment, structure, and purpose in their lives.

Research has shown that Adult Clubhouse Programs significantly improve mental health outcomes, reducing symptoms, hospitalization rates, and substance abuse. Further, by equipping members with skills and vocational training, the programs boost employment rates and foster a sense of independence and self-sufficiency. These clubhouses play a pivotal role in advocating for the rights of individuals with mental health challenges and contribute to reducing the stigma associated with mental illnesses in society.

Vibrant supports the Clubhouse model and the city’s plans for expansion due to its potential to enhance access to resources and care for individuals in New York who are living with serious mental illnesses. This program model offers support and facilitates the integration of individuals into the community by promoting a sense of belonging, empowerment, and purpose. Clubhouse programs play a vital role in the recovery and well-being of New Yorkers with mental health challenges, fostering a more inclusive and supportive society for all.
