The Way Home Campaign FY 24 Budget Recommendations
February 6, 2023 by Nadia Malik

Ending chronic homelessness is a matter of life and death. With a budget of nearly $18 billion, DC can afford to ensure that all of our neighbors, especially those who have been living outside or in crowded shelters for years and even decades, have the housing they need to thrive. As Mayor Bowser enters her historic third term, we are calling on her to fulfill her campaign promise to end chronic homelessness in DC.

The Way Home Campaign, our 110 partner organizations and 7,000 individual supporters call on Mayor Bowser to:

  1. Invest $36.6 million to end chronic homelessness for 1,260 single adults with Permanent Supportive Housing (PSH), fund PSH for hundreds of families, and ensure the continuation of non-congregate shelter capacity and expand bridge housing
  2. Expand programs that prevent chronic homelessness
  3. Ensure that DC, particularly the Department of Human Services, has the staffing and capacity needed to implement historic investments made in FY 22 & 23 to end chronic homelessness
  4. Make shelters more dignified, non-congregate, and service rich and to add medical respite beds
  5. Address DC’s dire lack of low-income housing

There are numerous opportunities to advocate for a moral budget, including testifying at performance and budget oversight hearings before the DC Council and attending the Mayor’s Budget Engagement Forums. As a supporter of The Way Home, you know that housing ends homelessness. We need your help to ensure that Mayor Bowser’s upcoming budget funds housing for our neighbors experiencing chronic homelessness. You have the power to enact real change. Please join us in using your voice and expertise to ensure that Mayor Bowser hears our priorities.
