Governor’s Delivers State of the State Address
On Wednesday, the Governor delivered her annual State of the State address to a joint session of the Michigan Legislature. She began by touting many of the things that have been done over the past year or more, titling many of them with 80s song titles. There were also cheers for the Detroit Lions.
On the business side, she called for tax credits for vehicle purchases and expenses incurred for caring for aging or ailing family members. She also spent the bulk of the speech talking about the need for research and development in the business sector and affordable housing across the state.
On the education side, she touted the increase in the per-pupil allowance last year and the expansion of free meals for all students. She then called for access to free pre-k for all 4year-olds to be accelerated, instead of waiting for full implementation in 2026, she is urging it to be done this year. Finally, she also called for free 2 years of community college by extending current programs to all high school graduates.
The first question, of course, is how will Michigan pay for all of these initiatives? The Governor will present her budget proposal on February 7, and we expect that to have many more details. You can view the State of the State speech or read the full text on her website.
