R.T. Licensure Efforts
Alabama is one of four states with no licensing or regulatory requirements for radiologic imaging and radiation therapy personnel. Currently, individuals in Alabama who perform radiologic imaging examinations using x-rays or computed tomography or who treat cancer patients using radiation therapy procedures are not required to take a single educational course in medical radiation safety, patient positioning or basic radiologic physics to safely create diagnostic images used to diagnose injury, illness or disease.
Licensure bills introduced in 2022 received support from the Alabama House and Senate; however, opposition from advanced practice nurses halted further movement on the bills. The Alabama Society of Radiologic Technologists is working to mitigate further opposition and is considering legislative activity in 2023.
