The General Services Administration (GSA) is proposing to make all organizations that wish to participate in federally funded programs adhere to new interpretations of federal civil rights laws and immigration laws. There are major problems with this proposal. First, GSA has no authority to do this. Second, parts of the interpretations are too vague for organizations to understand what they are agreeing to. Third, other parts of the interpretations are simply incorrect.
Numerous Catholic organizations, including schools, health care providers, and social service agencies, advance their religious missions through participation in federally funded programs, and thus will be affected by this proposal. The bottom line is that some Catholic organizations – especially those that serve immigrants, and those that play certain roles in combatting racism – could be made ineligible for those programs. This will harm the common good that we as a Church seek to advance.
As St. Paul teaches, the Church is one body with many members, each uniquely gifted and indispensable. In this spirit, we must continue to advocate for just policies and laws that uphold the dignity of every person, created in the image and likeness of God.
