Bills currently in both the Illinois House and Senate would permit parents to claim an Illinois tax credit of up to $700 per qualifying dependent child.   The Illinois Economic Policy Institute has estimated that the proposal would slash childhood poverty in the state by 7.6%.  Hence, the credit represents a powerful pro-family and anti-poverty tool.
