We are thanking President Biden for commuting 37 of the 40 federal death row sentences to life in prison without the chance of parole.
If you would like, you can also ask him to reconsider his position on the other three men's death sentences.
He believes that America must stop the use of the death penalty at the federal level, except in cases of terrorism and hate-motivated mass murder.
The three men whose sentences were not commuted: Dzhokhar Tsarnaev (Boston Marathon bombing 2013), Robert Bowers, (Tree of Life synagogue mass shooting in Pittsburgh) and Dylann Roof (Mother Emmanuel African American Church mass shooting, Charleston, S.C. 2005).
We understand that these were horrific crimes but, as Pope Francis reminded us on January 1, the World Day of Peace, "I would like once more to propose a concrete gesture that can help foster the culture of life, namely the elimination of the death penalty in all nations. This penalty not only compromises the inviolability of life but eliminates every human hope of forgiveness and rehabilitation."
