Recognizing the Role of DSPs Act; H.R. 2941/S. 1332
Easy Read:
Direct Support Professionals are the workers who assist people with disabilities with home and community-based supports.
They help with daily living needs and sometimes with on the job coaching and support.
Right now, the workers are labeled as “home health care aide”. This makes it harder to track how many Direct Support Professionals there are to support individuals with disabilities. Because of this, there are not enough workers to help individuals with disabilities with their home and community-based services.
The bill will create a category called “Direct Support Professionals.” This step will recognize the important role these workers play in assisting individuals with disabilities with their home and community-based services.
Definitions:
Direct Support Professionals- Worker who assists individuals with disabilities with their communication, on-the-job training, and help with daily living skills.
Home and community-based services- Services to help someone at home with getting dressed, learning new skills, help with cooking, and more living skills.
SOC- State Operated Centers, SOC. A SOC is a place where people with disabilities can receive services.
