Washington Update - October 2024
October 1, 2024 by Catherine Majewski
  • Star Grassroots Advocates
    • This year’s PAEA Student Health Policy Fellowship was hosted from September 9-11. Over the course of three days, the PAEA Government Relations team and 20 PA students from around the country gathered virtually to learn about advocacy and public policy, network, and champion PA education policy priorities. Thank you to all who volunteered their time and effort in making our 2024 PAEA Student Health Policy Fellowship a true success!
  • Advancing PAEA’s Advocacy Agenda
    • On September 16, PAEA and our Health Professions and Nursing Education Coalition (HPNEC) colleagues met with Office of Management and Budget (OMB) staff to discuss FY26 budget priorities within the context of a change in administration.
    • On September 23, PAEA hosted a listening session for programs on how they are being impacted by anti-DEI legislation and what additional resources PAEA can develop to provide support.
  • Health Care News in Washington
    • On September 25, the Senate passed a continuing resolution extending FY25 funding levels through December 20, setting up a year-end funding deadline that aligns closely with other expirations that impact the Association, such as mandatory funding for the National Health Service Corps (NHSC).
    • The U.S. Department of Education will use a phased rollout to launch the 2025-26 Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). The form will be available to hundreds of students on October 1 and will gradually increase availability to all by December 1. The staggered approach is an attempt to fix any issues before the form is open to everyone.
  • Opportunities for Action
    • Your voice matters in advocating for legislation that will positively impact the future of PA education and address healthcare disparities in underserved communities. Please contact your elected officials in Congress and urge them to support the Primary Care Team Education Centers Act.
    • To decrease disparities in access to care and ensure there are enough providers to meet patient demand nationwide, reach out to your elected representatives today to advocate for increased funding for all Title VII health workforce development programs for fiscal year 2025.
    • If you are committed to improving PA education as well as access to care for vulnerable patients, contact your elected representatives in Congress and tell them to support the Rural Health Preceptor Tax Fairness Act.
