The current Medicaid reimbursement rates have not kept pace with the rising costs of care due to inflation, leaving upstate nursing homes struggling to stay operational and forcing closures. The average upstate nursing home is losing $1.8 million every year.
Upstate’s low Medicaid rate makes it extremely difficult for nursing homes to attract and retain staff, forcing homes to limit admissions, close units, or close altogether.
The strain on nursing homes also disrupts the entire healthcare system. Hospitals are forced to retain patients who need rehabilitative care, putting enormous pressure on the hospital system as their beds and emergency rooms remain crowded.
Contact Governor Kathy Hochul and let her know Upstate nursing homes need Medicaid funding that covers the cost of care as part of the FY 2025-26 New York State Budget!
