Breaking Barriers: New Rules Enhance Nurse Practitioner Controlled Substance Prescribing
8/21/2025 12:00 AM CDT - 8/22/2026 12:00 AM CDT

We are pleased to announce that the Alabama Board of Medical Examiners has recently invited input from the Nurse Practitioner Alliance of Alabama on efforts to reduce barriers to prescribing controlled substances.

These collaborative discussions were highly productive and have led to meaningful changes in the prescribing regulations related to QACSC and LPSP

Notable updates include:

 • The allowance of escalating doses when clinically appropriate

 • Removal of the requirement to alternate prescriptions between nurse practitioners and supervising physicians

The full details of these regulatory changes will be published soon on the Alabama Board of Medical Examiners’ website.

We sincerely appreciate the Board’s willingness to engage in open dialogue and value the continued spirit of collaboration that strengthens our profession and advances patient care across Alabama.
