IVF made news last year when a clinic in Alabama mishandled frozen embryos, resulting in their death. A wrongful death lawsuit against the clinic was brought by three couples. In that suit, the state Supreme Court ruled that the frozen embryos can be considered children because the state constitution allows parents to sue over the death of a minor child, which “applies to all unborn children, regardless of their location.” Justice Jay Mitchell stated that “unborn children are ‘children’ ... without exception based on developmental stage, physical location, or any other ancillary characteristics.”
Please take the time to remind President Trump that there are alternatives to address the problem of infertility that do not put millions of lives at risk of being indefinitely frozen or destroyed. While IVF enabled many babies to be born, there have also been many more millions of embryos that have been discarded, experimented upon, or frozen. These “excess” embryos have been denied their natural right to live and fully develop.
